Signs to watch for

What to do first

  • Do not switch on or plug in any device that was exposed to water or heavy soot.
  • Unplug affected equipment at the wall if it is safe to reach.
  • Do not attempt to dry electronics with a hairdryer or heat source.
  • Identify anything holding irreplaceable data so it can be prioritised.
  • Leave devices where they are rather than moving them through sooty air.

Before anyone arrives: do not handle soot-covered or saturated belongings if there is any doubt about air quality or structural safety in the room. Photograph from the doorway and leave the sorting to the assessment.

The most expensive mistake is switching it on

The instinct after a fire or a flood is to test whether things still work. With electronics that instinct is genuinely costly. A device with soot or moisture inside it may power up perfectly — and in doing so, drive current through conductive contamination and destroy components that would otherwise have been fine after cleaning.

Data is the sharpest version of this problem. A hard drive that was wet is often recoverable if it is never spun up again, and often not recoverable if it is. If there is a computer in the property holding photographs or records that matter, the single most valuable thing you can do is leave it switched off and say so when you make the request.

Recovery is a per-device judgement, not a policy

There is no useful general rule about whether electronics survive a loss. A sealed appliance in a room that only got warm may be fine. A vented games console two rooms away that was running during the fire may have pulled soot through itself for an hour. Age and replacement cost matter too — cleaning is rarely the right answer for a cheap device near the end of its life, and frequently the right answer for specialist or professional equipment.

What an assessment gives you is a sorted list rather than a guess, and a clear note of which items were judged unsafe to test.
